The prospect of an armed police service moved a step closer yesterday when Scotland Yard announced the formation of a new firearms unit that will routinely patrol gun crime hotspots in London.

The team is drawn from the CO19, the Metropolitan Police specialist firearms unit, members of which shot dead Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Tube station after mistaking him for a suicide bomber in 2005.

The armed patrols are being deployed after a dramatic rise in gun crime. They will target key areas in North London, where Turkish gangs are engaged in a bloody turf war, and south of the Thames, where gangland shooting incidents have soared.

The C019 Proactive Unit will walk estates while some officers will use motorbikes to provide the capability for high-speed pursuit.

But the announcement has created a political row, with demands for Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, to convene an emergency meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA).

It is understood that Mr Johnson, who is also the MPA chairman, was not consulted by senior police commanders. The Times understands that Sir Paul Stephenson, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, was also not fully briefed on the move, which was taken at assistant commissioner level.

Neither Sir Paul nor Tim Godwin, the deputy commissioner, were at Scotland Yard to respond to the news, which was revealed in Police Review magazine.

Joanne McCartney, Labour’s policing spokeswoman on the London Assembly, said: “We want fewer guns on the streets, not more, and people to feel safe in their community — not scared of those who are supposed to protect them. There has been no debate, no consultation and apparently no consideration to the strong opposition that exists to arming the police.”

Yasmin Khan, of the Justice4Jean campaign, said: “This is very disconcerting and worrying and it makes me feel more threatened because we know what the consequences can be of having armed police on the streets.”

Scotland Yard said that the armed patrols began in June, on a trial basis, with a team of 21 officers. That number is set to double next month.

While national crime figures recorded a 5 per cent drop in firearms offences, and gun crime is down by as much as 27 per cent on Merseyside, London has experienced a 17 per cent rise from 1,484 to 1,737 offences in the 12 months to September.

The increase is being driven by a Turkish gang war, which has resulted in three firearms murders since March as two groups, the Tottenham Boys and the Bombacilar, fight for suprem-acy. In South London there has been a rise in teenage gang shootings.

The deployment of armed patrols to deal with gun gangs is a significant shift in emphasis, reminiscent of policing in Northern Ireland rather than anywhere else in Britain. “CO19 has traditionally provided a response to gun crime but this new unit sees a move towards a more proactive approach to deal with weapons and people linked to violence on our streets,” said Chief Superintendent Andy Tarrant, of CO19.

Inspector Derek Carroll, who heads the first patrol unit, said: “People in and around London will be used to seeing armed officers but this is taking it away from the main roads to where these gangs are hanging around.”

The unit’s scope ranges from community reassurance to “estate sweeps” and it has already recovered a number of weapons, including two rifles hidden in a garage in Brixton and a loaded handgun on a roof in North London.

Peter Smyth, the chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, welcomed the move: “If these areas are where the gun crime is, then that is where the armed police should be.” But one officer said: “The worry is that more and more officers will be expected to carry firearms and that is not what the average officer wants.”

Last night a spokesman for Mr Johnson said that the mayor had sought reassurance from Sir Paul over armed deployments. He said: “The mayor has been reassured that there is no intention of using armed police in the routine manner suggested. Armed police have a role but that should be the exception, not the norm.”

Church leaders have accused the Government of giving preferential treatment to the Muslim community because of "political correctness".

Parishes are being starved of state funds to help the poor as a result of money being diverted to other faiths, senior clergy told the General Synod, which is meeting in York.

A report endorsed by Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, claimed that the Government had become "unbalanced" in its approach to faith groups.

It argued that the determination of ministers to tackle Islamic extremism in the wake of the London bombings on July 7, 2005, had led to a preoccupation with Muslim communities at the expense of Christian groups.

Subsequently, the report said, churches are facing a challenge to maintain their presence in poor parts of the country.

The report's co-author, the Rt Rev Stephen Lowe, Bishop for Urban Life and Faith, said that the Church of England had applied to the Department of Communities and Local Government for money to "enable us to support parishes".

"It seems as if political correctness by Government may defeat us," he said, adding that the Church was ideally placed to help improve social cohesion.

Archbishop Sentamu, who wrote the foreword to the report, What Makes a Good City, told the Synod on Saturday that it was important that Bishop Lowe had "not been shy of saying things to the Government".

"The Church has listened to his trumpet call," he added.

The report says that there is a "great deal of inconsistency in the way individual [Government] ministers deal with religious groups".

It continues: "Christian groups in particular have suffered irrational prejudice against their funding applications and a lack of understanding of the nature and sometimes fragility of the local church.

"There is a perception, perhaps justified, that it has been easier for Islamic groups to receive financial support than other faith groups."

Bishop Lowe claims that there have been numerous examples of local authorities inviting consultation with local faith groups and failing to invite any Christians.

"There can be little doubt that the terrorism agenda has seriously unbalanced government relationships with the faith communities," the report says.

"Ministers are left to pronounce from a position of ignorance at best, or prejudice at worst.

"Ministers and civil servants see their priorities focused on dealing with Islamic extremism and treating all the faith communities in an even handed way despite relative differences in size."

Philip Giddings, chairman of the Church's mission and public affairs division, expressed concern over the Government's attitude to faith groups.

"We have a huge challenge in sharing our work and vision with political leaders who do not share the same values and faith," he said.

"They are ignorant of it and we must shift the perception of the contribution made by the Church in building a better community."

Bishop Lowe said that the Church was committed to providing welfare to some of the most deprived and impoverished areas of the country.

"We must not become a comfortable Church for a comfortable nation, but a church totally committed to its continued presence in uncomfortable England," he said.

The Church published a report called Faithful Cities in 2006, which was critical of Labour's social policies.

Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said at the time that whilst people had got richer over the previous two decades, the period had also seen "fear, racial tension and the tendency to treat neighbours as strangers".

Thefive-day retreat near Bath is already fully booked. On top of cooking,hiking and canoeing, activities for campers include a competition todisprove the existence of the mythical unicorn – with the winnerreceiving a £10 note on which Dawkins, the author of The God Delusion,has signed his name.

The organiser, Samantha Stein, said the campwas not only for the offspring of atheists or "irreligious" parents."It is a secular alternative open to children of parents of all faithsand none," she said.

"It is not about changing what they think, but the way that they think. There is very little that attacks religion; we are not a rival to religious camps."

The£275 all-inclusive adventure break is supported, Stein says, by aone-off donation from the Richard Dawkins Foundation, but he is notpersonally involved.

Most of us chafe under rules. We think they restrict us from doing what we want. At first glance then, it may seem strange to hear the psalmist talk of rejoicing in God's laws more than in riches (Psalm 119:14). But God's laws were given to free us to be all he wants us to be. They restrict us from doing those things that will cripple us and keep us from being our best. God's laws are guidelines to help us follow in his path and not wander onto paths that lead to destruction.

Money - it's all some people think about. It can ease labour, buy certain comforts, and offer some security. Money has become so important to some people that they will do almost anything to get it. But far more valuable than wealth is obedience to God, for it is a heavenly treasure rather than an earthly one (Luke 12:33). We should do what God wants regardless of the financial implications. Make the psalmists prayer your own, asking God to help you to prefer obedience to making money; it's in your own best interest in the long run. (Psalm 119:36).

The world is in turmoil at present and if we are to believe what the Bible says of the events that will come upon the earth in future, things are going to get much, much worse. Jesus also says that the love of many will grow cold in the church. There will be apostasy in the church on a scale never witnessed throughout history as the final events of the end of the age as we know it, will be played out on the world stage to ushes in the Kingdom of God, to be governed by His Son Jesus Christ, to whom all authority, honour and power have been given, by God the Father.

This is not a time for Christians to be playing at Christianity, or thinking that church attendance, and nominal Christianity is going to save us in the times to come. We will all have to have oil in our lamps; each of us has a personal responsibility to ensure that we are walking and living in the power of the Holy Spirit. We cannot save each other - only ourselves. God will judge each person individually for every word, decision and action taken in His name, and to many he will say that he never knew them.

The concept of judgement of all mankind by God in future, should be a wake up call to each of us to ensure that we rid our lives of sin so that we can walk in righteousness and the power of the Holy Spirit living in us. The book of Romans teaches that we as Christians are to be living sacrifices to God; vesells of honour and not dishonour. Our lives do affect the lives of others, for better or for worse. Jesus taught His disciples to say that when they preach the gospel, they are to say 'the kingdom of God is near to you'. This is because the Kingdom of God no longer resides in buildings and temples as it did in the OldTestament. Jesus taught that the Kingdom of God now lives within us and the law of God (which was written on stone tablets), is now written on our heart and conscience.

The purpose of the Holy Spirit living in and through us is to empower us to perform spiritual service, to produce spiritual fruit in our lives, to direct us, to guide us, and to teach us and reveal the truth of God's word to us. Revelation of who God is, and the Kingdom principles that He teaches in the Bible and by the Holy Spirit, are designed to transform our minds, and then our hearts and our actions, value systems, decisions and beliefs.

As degenerate, sinful creatures, we all fall short of the Glory of God our Creator and Saviour. No one is righteousnes in themselves. In fact, even our most (self) righteousness offering to God is like a filthy rag in His sight. The only righteousness that counts for anything is the righteousness of Jesus Christ. He paid the price for the sin of mankind. He is our HIgh Priste that continually makes intercession for us before God the Father, as an advocate, a solicitor, pleading our innocence before a mighty and powerful judge. We al stand accused and domed by the death penalty that sin brings. The bible says that we are born as sinners and therefore are all under penalty of death and eternal seperation from God. We are doomed to a Christless and Godless eternity. We are destined for hell - a place created for all sinners, to burn forever in the lake of fire. God has planned and created a place of eternal torment where there is no relief day or night, for those who rebel against him.

It is not God's will that we should perish. It is His will that we should have life. But God knows that as created beings, we are not capable of having life that is from the spirit (of God). This is why Jesus was sent to earth by God, to present himself as a living and willing sacrifice, to pay the penalty for the sins of men, so that we could be declared 'forgiven' by God and reconciled to Him as our heavenly father.

John 3:16 ' For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whoseover believes in him, will not perish but have eternal life'.

The bible also teaches that salvation is a free gift. There is nothing that we can do to merit God's favour. The only way back to God the father, is to accept the free offering He has provided for the sins of a lost and dooomed creation, and to believe on the name of Jesus; that He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. Jesus himself said that He has come to give us an abundant life (of the spirit), and that there is much moe to life than the clothes we wear, the food we eat, what we buy, the work we do and so on. True life, comes from God. It regenerates us, revives us, removes the deceptive scales of sin from our eyes so that we can clearly see the life and truth of God.

God is love; God is Life - abundant life; He is the author and founder of all life in the heavens and the earth. As our Creator; he understands exactly what we need to live a full life. He also knows how to fix us and regenerate our spirits that have been damaged by the destructive power of sin. The wages of sin is death. The bible speaks of a second death - a death after our physical bodies have died on the earth. This is a spiritual death that has eternal consequences. Our spirit man does not actually die when our bodies die. We will live forever, but the choices we have made in this life will determine where we spend eternity.

It is my prayer for you today that you inherit eternal life. Inheritance is a free gift that is not deserved. Jesus left us an eternal inheritance by willingly giving His life to be broken and destroyed, as a final atonement (offering) for the sin of mankind, and to pay a price that was acceptable to God. You have the choice today to decide whether you will live for yourself, or believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and come into your spiritual inheritance for eternity. The choice of life or death lies before you today. It is God's will that you choose life (Deuteronomy 28).
